Growing Up Music: Johnny Walker

When I speak of Johnny Walker, I do not speak of the whisky

I speak of the comedian / actor who was quite a beloved character in Hindi cinema. He did not sing, of course, but his enactment of the songs was marvellous. These are two songs that are very much a part of our culture, and are identified with Johny Walker.

Those were the days when there was real melody in the music

Johnny Walker’s real name was Badruddin Jamaluddin Kazi. He died in 2003, and is one of the more loved actors in India.

The first, is about a street head massage, with oil! It dates to 1957. The singer is Mohammed Rafi, one of our best singers ever.

the second is about the difficulty of life in Bombay. This song dates back to 1956.

When I was living in Bombay, I had a shoulder injury while doing some gym stuff. I went to an orthopaedic surgeon called Dr Nadkarni, who’s also a brilliant singer. He has put up a studio in his house, and he practices a few hours a day.

He made this delightful video about Bombay, He made one more about Bandra,a locality in Bombay. I love Bandra. I lived there, on and off, for almost 10 years.

Here, in this video, he moans about the lousy state of infrastructure, and the corruption that exists in society. He sang in the video.
